A "normal day".
Wake up with the sun and birds while sipping instant coffee out of a tin cup. So peaceful watching the sun rise up over the tips of the Himalayas and to see the first light hit the valley before it hits me. Yoga at 7 with a teacher who looks like an indian fairy drawn right from the pages of Cicely Mary Barker's illustrations..with a soft voice to match. The day is set.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner all consist of some sort of white rice or white rice product and at least one very not-so-good-for-you bread thing which I, of course, have to try. Mutton (goat) was served at lunch and I was not in the adventurous mood, so I passed. All I could think of was the thought of maybe eating one of Malcolm and Carol's goats..and I just could not bear the thought of eating Bob Dylan!

Lily and I went to town this afternoon by ourselves for the first time. It was easily 95 degrees and humid..but no one seemed to care. We purchased cloth of Lily's choosing at a fabric shop for some new clothing. Then, we climbed the steep stairs of a tailor's shop where we were very carefully measured. "By Tuesday" he said..5 pairs of pants and 3 shirts between the two of us which will cost about 900 rupees. ($18.) There were 6 men on the floor in the open room sewing away..see picture. Clothes shopping is so brilliant....you pick the materials and then it's made in whatever style you like in just a two days or so. How cool is that? I can't help but feel a little badly for the workers though.

It is Indian custom to ask many questions of strangers..like:
"How old are you?" "Where is your husband"..followed by.."What does you husband do"..followed by..."You happy?"...followed by..."How old you think I am?"..the last one got me in trouble a little bit..as I thought this woman was MUCH older than she looked and I lowballed a "56"...and she answered.."48". OUCH! So, I learned always low-ball the low-ball.

I enjoyed a nap today under the whirr of the ceiling fan while the curtains fluttered in the breeze and Lily watched some trashy tv on itunes. The internet boggles my mind...in the fact that we can download tv shows and watch them from India?.....and even this blog.
Dinner on the porch followed by hot bucket showers makes us happy little campers. Tomorrow, a hike and picnic is scheduled as a group. Chelsea Allen and I are supposed to meet up too! Small little world we all live in, huh? Good night everyone. Sending you the divine energy I am feeling. I know it will reach you.

  1. Amster,
Sounds great. I especially love the custom clothing! You seem to be getting such a wonderful feel for the culture.
The only thing that stood out from your post was the instant coffee! I know my girl. She needs the real deal - with cream!
    Love you,

  2. Your posts bring tears to my eyes - I want to be there too! It all sounds amazing. Wish I knew where my old friend K.T. Shama Sundar was so I could put you & Lil in touch with him. Your stories bring back many wonderful memories of the stories he told me of his country that he loved so much. Wonderful.

    Love to you both
